The most perfect engagement ring ever! No man shall take THIS away from women!
Twittering around this morning, I found an interesting link from Details magazine about a new trend in the world of Weddings– a “man”gagement ring, an engagement ring for a man. According to Urban Dictionary, it’s a new trend that typically applies to “progressive partners” in a heterosexual couple. I’m thinking they mean independent women; women who won’t wait for men to propose. Is that what’s it’s going to come down to ladies? And do you think we’re making it too easy for them? I do.
I think Mangagement rings just make it easier for men to have to commit– they don’t have to go buy the ring now, they can wait for us to be fed up with waiting and go out and buy one ourselves. The trend began in England, apparently, from my google search. Thank god for google, you really can find out about anything! According to Newser.com, a site that appeals to the ever-present need for condensing the news (you know what’s putting people like myself out of work), the British jeweler, H. Samuel introduced a Tioro, a titanium wedding band with a subtle diamond– for a man. Additionally, the WeddingBee, a blogger, apparently adopted this herself in 2008, according to her post.
Another quick google search, yielded a variety of companies that carry mangagement rings, however, the King of them all– Tiffany’s– does not. In a world where men are being given more and more female privelages–such as man-waxing, man-cures, mandals, and of course man-pedicures– they seem to have finally be given the right to wear our special sign; to be able to avoid the ONE responsibility of PROPOSING marriage; now all they have to do is commit, which we all know is hard enough to get them to do as it is, shouldn’t buying the diamond be their responsibility too? The UK paper, The Telegraph, seems to agree with me. Even ABC featured something on the phenomenon.
I am a modern woman, independent, fierce even– however I don’t want to have to propose and I most certainly do not want him to wear my ring! It seems that the fight for equality for women has not helped us, it’s helped men. Men have taken over our nail salons, tanning beds, and now they are taking the Jewelry cases?!?! It’s simply too much to bear!
What would Carrie say? What would SAMANTHA say!! I wonder if this trend is taking off in the City of Sex and the City, I most certainly hope not. It’s one thing to be independent, that’s what the right hand ring is for, but all the independence gained by finally getting women to buy themselves diamonds has led them to feel the need to buy them for their significant others. Look I’m not saying it’s wrong if it’s what YOU WANT, but I most certainly hope this does not become the norm, because believe you me, even independent women like me want you to “put a ring on it.” (Preferably one in a little blue box)
